The holidays are here. It’s time to cover the front yard with lights and put a wreath on the door. This time of year also means busy roads and crowded stores as people shop for the ideal gifts for loved ones.
BMW celebrates the season with a warm-hearted, nostalgic commercial. The star of the show is a pristine BMW 1500 sedan.
BMW Wishes Happy Holidays To Its Fans
The commercial sets up a mystery at the beginning. A little boy is buying gifts with his parents. He finds a card that says “Best Grandma Ever,” and there’s a drawing of an old lady driving a classic BMW 507 roadster.
Meanwhile, the kid’s parents are shopping for presents but aren’t finding the perfect gifts. Then, the little boy walks in front of a window and sees what the family is looking for. The audience doesn’t know what it is yet, though.
The scene cuts to a gift exchange, and the kid pushes a big box into the room. Grandma opens the present and has a surprised look.
The kid got a booster seat so that he could ride in grandma’s classic BMW 1500 sedan. The light blue car cruises through a neighborhood while the grandma and grandson nod their heads to Run DMC’s Christmas in Hollis. Kids on the sidewalk jealously stare at the pair as they drive by.
What Is A BMW 1500?
The BMW 1500 sedan has an important legacy in the brand’s history as the first model to be part of the original “Neue Klasse” family of vehicles. It debuted at the 1961 International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany. The model gave the company a modern midsized four-door model for the era to fill a hole in the brand’s lineup.
As the model name implied, the engine was a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with a single overhead camshaft producing 80 horsepower. A four-speed manual sent the power to the rear wheels.
The vehicle proved to be a success, and BMW upgraded it with a more powerful 1.6-liter engine in 1963. An even more potent model with a 1.8-liter engine arrived in 1964. This evolution eventually led to the sporty 2002 tii.
TopSpeed’s Take
This is a fun commercial. The video starts with an entertaining mystery, and the solution turns out to be a little boy enjoying a classic car with his grandma. There’s nothing flashy about the ad, but showing off a classic model is a fun way for BMW to celebrate the holidays.
