Geely, the Chinese parent company of Lotus, Volvo, and Polestar, doesn’t sell cars in the U.S. outside of its subsidiary brands. If it did, you’d have the opportunity to purchase cars with impressive model names like Coolray, Tugella, and Okavango (which is also a delta in Botswana). You’d also have the chance to own one of the most far-out nameplates this side of the Horsehead Nebula, as Geely has unveiled a new plug-in hybrid crossover called the Galaxy Starship 7. You wouldn’t have to pay astronomically for it, either, as it’s selling for the equivalent of about $13,700. If you think the name and the price are impressive, wait until you hear about the range.
Geely Galaxy Starship 7 Goes Up To 882 Miles
The Galaxy Starship l7 is powered by a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter engine and an electric motor. The internal combustion engine is good for 110 horsepower, and Geely claims a truly stellar 46.5-percent thermal efficiency. The electric motor provides the bulk of the power, though, at 215 horsepower. It comes with your choice of two batteries, the smaller with a nine-kilowatt-hour capacity good for 34 miles of electric range, Geely says. The larger is 18 kilowatt-hours, providing about 75 miles. When you add in the range from a full gas tank, the Galaxy Starship 7 can go 882 miles before needing to stop to refuel. That’s enough to get you from New York City to Milwaukee … if it were sold here.
It’s also impressively inexpensive, starting at about $13,700 for the base Sailing Edition with the smaller battery. The Galaxy Starship 7 Sailing+ Edition with the larger battery starts at about $15,500, while the line-topping Pilot Edition remains at a still-low $18,230.
It Doesn’t Look Horrible
Despite its bargain-bin pricing and rather generic exterior design, the Galaxy Starship 7 doesn’t seem like a total heap. It offers heated and ventilated front seats with a 14-point massage function. The front seats recline into a completely flat position, turning the rear seats into a sort of chaise lounge (that will also massage your legs). In such a configuration, it can also accommodate a mattress, so you can camp out in your car.
Up front, it has a 13.8-inch digital driver display and a 14.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen. It also includes wireless phone charging, a “Friend-like AI interaction” to control some vehicle functions remotely, and the formidably named “God’s Eye 540” surround-view parking camera. Between the neat seats, the long-range, and the cheap price, the Geely Galaxy Starship 7 is enough to spark some curiosity. But, really, it’s the name that’s the biggest allure.
