Now that New Year’s is over, expect automakers to release their sales results for 2024. This information is useful for understanding how a carmaker is performing in the competitive auto market.

Hyundai and Kia are among the first companies to announce their delivery volumes. Both are celebrating record results from last year.

A Strong Showing For Hyundai

Hyundai Motor America delivered a record-setting 836,802 vehicles in 2024, which was up 4 percent from moving 801,195 models in 2024. The automaker also had its best fourth quarter ever in the United States by selling 226,308 units – 10 percent more than Q4 2023. In December alone, the automaker shifted 78,498 examples, which was four percent more than the same month in the previous year.

Sales of electrified vehicles, including EVs, hybrids, and PHEVs, were up 50 percent year-over-year. Deliveries of just EVs increased by 13 percent.

The Tucson was Hyundai’s best-selling product in the United States in 2024 tallying 206,126 deliveries. The Elantra was in a distant second place with a volume of 136,698 vehicles.

“With exciting new models like the IONIQ 9 and increased US production ramping up at our new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia, I’m confident this momentum will continue,”

– said Hyundai Motor North America CEO Randy Parker.

Hyundai will make some big debuts over the coming year. For example, the company is preparing to launch the next-gen Palisade, a big, boxy SUV. The automaker also plans to launch the three-row Ioniq 9 EV.

Great Times At Kia

Kia has reason to celebrate, too. The automaker moved a record 796,488 vehicles in the United States in 2024 – up from 782,451 units in 2023. The 73,303 deliveries in December also set a new achievement for the automaker for that month.

Like Hyundai, Kia also saw surging EV sales, with their deliveries rising 74 percent year-over-year. Electric vehicles were seven percent of the automaker’s 2024 total sales.

The Kia Sportage was the brand’s best-selling product in 2024, totaling 161,917 vehicles. The Kia K4/Forte came in second place with 139,778 deliveries.

Kia plans to launch an upgraded Sportage in 2025. It gains redesigned bumpers, updated headlights, and a new Connected Car Navigation Cockpit with a 12.3-inch LCD screen.

“Kia has solidified its leadership position within the EV market thanks, in part, to the successful launch of our flagship EV9 SUV and the introduction of Carnival hybrid powertrain, actively responding to the evolving demands of the market. Kia will leverage our consumer-centric, world-class product offerings and maintain this upward, positive momentum,”

– said Seungkyu Yoon, President and CEO of Kia North America.

TopSpeed’s Take

Clearly, business was great for Hyundai and Kia in 2024. Judging from the sales numbers, SUVs remain a big business for both of them. However, it’s intriguing to see that traditional sedans were in second place for both brands. There are still plenty of people shopping for cars rather than higher-riding utility vehicles.
