Hyundai is one of many automakers that is switching over from the Combined Charging Standard (CCS) to Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS). In fact, the 2025 Ioniq 5 is the first vehicle outside of the Tesla brand to come with a NACS port installed. New buyers will have no trouble charging at available Tesla Superchargers, or other chargers with a NACS plug. But, Hyundai already has many EV customers with a CCS port who would love to have access to those same chargers, especially as Tesla opens them up to other EVs. Normally, an approved adapter (the automakers are specific about what they’ll bless) costs $200 or more, but Hyundai will be providing them to its customers for free in the new year.

Who Is Eligible?

Hyundai will provide the NACS adapter to any owner of a Hyundai EV with a CCS port purchased or leased before January 31, 2025. Eligible models include:

Hyundai says owners will be able to request their adapter via the MyHyundai owner portal in the new year. Hyundai will even cover shipping. Hyundai says it will provide more details in 2025.

Additionally, Hyundai says that the Genesis brand will also be participating in the free adapter program, and will reveal details in the new year. Kia announced a similar program for the EV6, EV9, and Niro EV back in September.

The Move To NACS

Hyundai moving to NACS is part of a larger move by automakers to create what appears will eventually be a universal charging standard. The updated 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 will come with a NACS port installed, as with the Ioniq 9 when it goes on sale. Hyundai will give other EV models NACS ports as they are refreshed or updated.

With a NACS port or adapter, Hyundai owners will have access to over 20,000 Tesla Superchargers, and a total of over 38,000 DC fast chargers when you include the CCS networks.

“To accelerate EV adoption, we started by listening to our current owners,” said Olabisi Boyle, senior vice president of product planning and mobility strategy at Hyundai Motor North America. “These adapters will make DC fast-charging more convenient for current owners. Plus, the NACS port on new models like the upcoming Ioniq 9 along with improvements to our digital charging ecosystem, will further enhance the customer experience for future EV drivers. Our goal is to make the transition to electric seamless.”
