Kia turned 80 this week, and instead of a little cake and Coke office party, the brand did what Kia does best these days: it dropped something wild, stylish, and futuristic. At a special heritage exhibition in Seoul, Kia revealed the Vision Meta Turismo concept—a sedan dripping in a mix of sharp angles, fluid contours, and bold ideas about where the brand wants to go next. And if early reactions are any indication, this might be one of the most striking design studies Kia has ever created.
A Concept Born From 80 Years
Kia’s anniversary event was a statement about Kia’s Bladerunner-esq, neo-noir style goals, punctuated by the reveal of Kia’s newest concept. Executives, designers, employees, and former leaders came together to showcase the company’s evolution from the once-humble bicycle maker to global automaker selling more than three million vehicles a year. Part of the celebration included a heritage film, personal stories from longtime employees, a performance by violinist Clara-Jumi Kang, and a sprawling exhibition titled The Legacy of Movement, which will remain open in Korea until 2029.
But the main attraction was the Vision Meta Turismo, a concept that Kia says embodies a new era of performance driving, immersive digital interaction, and lounge-inspired interior design. Kia aimed at hosting an event less like a traditional show car and more as a thesis on how Kia thinks we’ll move in the future.
Where Futurism Meets 1960s Grand Touring
The Vision Meta Turismo is a sleek fastback with short overhangs, nearly-alien surfacing, and an aerodynamic stance that borrows spiritual cues from long-distance touring cars of the 1950s and 1960s. Its design philosophy is cranked to the extreme here, blending crisp geometry with soft, “natural” lines. A split-headlight wraps into a rear-facing camera pod, replacing traditional side mirrors. The entire car looks like a design concept for a sci-fi film. And we haven’t even gotten to the interior yet!
Inside, the Meta Turismo takes a hard turn from what human drivers are used to. If you got put in this thing with no instructions, chances are it’d stay put. Hell, there seems to be a joystick on the armrest. This thing completely abandons the now-typical massive center touchscreen in favor of something else entirely: a full-width augmented reality head-up display spanning the base of the windshield. The system integrates “Smart Glass” technology that allows 3D graphics to appear as if they’re floating above the roadway. It’s paired with a futuristic yoke-style steering wheel offering three drive experiences—Speedster, Dreamer, and Gamer—that adjust the AR graphics and overall digital immersion. (Stop me when you hear something that sounds like a car.)
In all seriousness, Kia is openly experimenting with how humans and vehicles will interact when screens, voice assistants, and real-time overlays become the primary interface. It’s not exactly the most comfortable future to imagine, but it does seem like a reasonable one to expect given the current path we’re on.
Could This Be the Electric Successor to the Kia Stinger?
Back to actual car nerd stuff….
Ever since the Stinger bowed out, fans have wondered when—or if—Kia would build another performance sedan. While Kia refuses to confirm anything, the Vision Meta Turismo feels like more than a design exercise. Its proportions, fastback profile, and electric-friendly long wheelbase all line up with rumors of a high-performance EV8 sedan coming around 2026.
Leaked union documents have already hinted at an electric Stinger successor with more than 600 horsepower—something positioned to replace both the late Stinger and the K8 sold overseas. Pair that with the fact that Kia currently has no analog to the Hyundai Ioniq 6 in its lineup, and the Meta Turismo suddenly looks like a preview of a missing puzzle piece. Also, just a hunch, but including Meta in the name could suggest a hint that this is, in fact, a concept for something that will go to production and be built in Kia’s new Meta plant.
No one at Kia will say this is “the new Stinger,” but the brand’s own design chief, Ho Sung Song, admitted last year that a Stinger-style replacement is at least under study. And if Kia plans to re-enter the performance sedan arena, this concept’s mix of grand-touring flair and cutting-edge tech feels like a good fit.
A Look Ahead
We reached out to Kia for comment on the new concept, but we haven’t gotten a statement yet. I guess Kia isn’t ready to share powertrain specs or production plans. That could be a marketing play or the result of a concept that was more an exercise in envisioning the future, and less of a model for a real production car. Who’s to say? All we know for sure is, the Vision Meta Turismo is clearly more than just an anniversary showpiece. It feels like a signal that Kia’s future will be equal parts style, digital experience, and performance capability.
As the brand steps into its next decade, one thing is clear: Kia has no interest in playing it safe, which is without question the most exciting part of the Korean powerhouse. The last thing we need is more companies making crossovers shaped like body hair trimmers. We want more companies like Kia: former bicycle makers now imagining electric grand tourers with AR windshields and futuristic, cryo chamber-looking cabins. And if the Meta Turismo is any hint of what’s coming, Kia’s next 80 years might be hard to adjust to for many of us, but it promises to be wild.
