Right now, if you want to go buy a big, new Genesis SUV, you’ll be looking at something different: the midsize GV80. The automaker currently does not have a full-size SUV in its lineup, but that will change with the introduction of the GV90, which our spy photographers saw during testing. Moreover, unlike the GV80, the GV90 will be electric, eschewing the GV80’s 300- to 400-horsepower V-6 for a slew of electric motors.
The Genesis GV90 Takes Inspiration From A Stunning Concept Car
The new GV90 will borrow its design from 2024’s Neolun concept, which at the time showcased Genesis’ vision for a luxury SUV. Back in March of 2024, Genesis said that the Neolun “represents a modern reinterpretation of Korea’s distinct hospitality culture.” The concept featured some truly luxurious features, like pillarless coach doors a-la Rolls-Royce, a massive display that appeared to pop out of the dash, and a spacious cabin. Unfortunately, this prototype doesn’t have the coach doors from the concept, though at least one prototype has been spotted in the wild sporting them.
The GV90 EV Will Be A Looker
Peer through the camouflage, and it’s apparent Genesis has taken much of the Neolun’s styling and applied it here. The grille looks to feature the same lighting elements as the concept, with a large V-shaped arrangement at the center of the front bumper. The square body and bulging fenders look the same, and it’s possible the camo down the side of the SUV is hiding the extended lighting elements, just like the concept. There are some differences as well, namely the new wheels and full-size mirrors — the concept used a slimmer, more stylized design. We don’t know a lot about what’ll be under the hood in the GV90 at this stage. It’ll, of course, be electric. Given Genesis’ current crop of EVs, 300 miles or so of range isn’t out of the question, and we’re sure that the automaker will be targeting big power in order to keep pace with German rivals.
TopSpeed’s Take
The GV90 is going to be Genesis’ flagship luxury SUV, sitting alongside its G90 sedan counterpart. If this car is anything to go off, Genesis will be pulling out all the stops in the name of luxury while also aiming to undercut luxury competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and BMW X7. That’s a tall order, but the G90 manages the same trick while eschewing some of the more boisterous luxury features the German competition brings to the table. If the GV90 can do the same, it should be a big hit.
