Given the slew of electric premium off-roaders on the market, you’d think a fully electric Ford Bronco would go gangbusters. Ford hasn’t seen fit, for whatever reason, to electrify the current one. Instead, ICON will electrify an old one for you. It’ll cost a lot more money, but there’s also 500 horsepower, the undeniable charm of the original Bronco’s looks, and modern engineering.

What’s Under The Hood Of The ICON Bronco EV?

ICON says the single electric motor produces 500 horsepower and north of 440 pound-feet of torque. It’s fed by a 105-kWh battery pack which ICON estimates is good for between 175 and 200 miles of driving. It’s not a lot, but the old Bronco is also shaped like a brick. Thankfully, a 400-volt architecture ensures charging is quick, with the automaker claiming around an hour to charge to 80% from empty.

The single motor is all the Bronco needs, routed through a full-time all-wheel drive system and new Currie front and rear axles. There’s a front locker and limited-slip differential on each, respectively, to aid in traction both on and off-road. ICON also updates the suspension and brakes with new gear, the former courtesy of Rieger and the latter handled by Brembo. A new steering system is fitted too, with all of it hiding under the nearly unmodified skin of a classic Bronco.

Modern In and Out

ICON doesn’t drastically alter the interior, favoring original switchgear and upholstery with a period look. There are some hidden modernities, however. These come in the form of power windows and locks, as well as new climate control (complete with A/C) and an upgraded sound system. A new head unit hides in the center stack, featuring phone projection and serving as a command center for the car’s various functions. Drive modes can be altered here, too.

The bad news comes as a pair. For one, only ten will be made. For another, they’re priced at $499,000 before any personalization. At that price point, customers will be able to do pretty much whatever they want in terms of spec.

TopSpeed’s Take

Half a million dollars for a Ford Bronco, even one so comprehensively modified as this, is a lot of money. The range is disappointing too, but the power isn’t. It’s a mixed bag, but if you want one, ICON is taking orders right now.
