Porsche’s Taycan Turbo GT is no stranger to setting records. Now, it has set a new production EV lap record around the Interlagos Circuit in Brazil, doing so with a lap time faster than that managed by a 911 Turbo S.

The Taycan Turbo GT, the fastest and most powerful iteration of the brand’s all-electric saloon, lapped the 2.677-mile Interlagos Circuit, home to the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix, in 1m 42.1 seconds. This not only demolishes the previous best for an EV production car around the Autódromo José Carlos Pace – a 1m 49.8s lap, set three years ago by the Taycan Turbo S – but also bests the 1m 43.087s previously posted by a 992-generation 911 Turbo S at the same circuit.

A Lap Record, From The Drivers’ Perspective

At the wheel of the 1,109-horsepower Taycan Turbo GT, unveiled for the first time last year, for the record-setting run was Brazil’s Felipe Nasr, a former Formula 1 driver with Sauber, a Porsche factory driver in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, and two-time outright winner of the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

“Coming to Interlagos straight after winning the 24 Hours of Daytona and getting into the Taycan Turbo GT was an incredible experience. I was expecting strong acceleration and brutal torque. Ultimately, however, it was the overall performance that more than convinced me.

“On the incline before the ‘Curva do Café’, just before the main straight, I used Attack Mode and the car reached 272 km/h [around 141 MPH] at the end of the corner. When I came out of the ‘Curva do Sol’, I was already doing over 200 km/h [124 MPH] on the back straight.

“It’s amazing how brutally the car accelerates and delivers its power.”

“It’s amazing how brutally the car accelerates and delivers its power. The Taycan GT was very precise to steer in slow corners and remained stable even under heavy braking. The balance, the grip — a real performance machine.”

The Taycan Turbo GT, already 165 pounds lighter than its Turbo S brethren, was equipped with the Weissach Package for the record-setting run. In ‘Attack Mode,’ this adds 120 kilowatts for up to 10 seconds, producing “more than 1,100-horsepower for short periods.” Tellingly though, the Weissach Package, specifically designed for the track, also removes the rear bench altogether.

Fourth EV Lap Record For The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT

This is the fourth new EV track record set by the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, the all-electric rival to Tesla’s Model Y Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire having also posted new benchmarks at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, at Laguna Seca (Spring 2024), and at the Shanghai International Circuit in China (October 2024).

The previous records were all set by Porsche development driver Lars Kern. The 12.944-mile Nürburgring run was particularly impressive, as Kern’s 7m 07.55s lap run aboard a pre-production model was a full TWENTY SIX seconds faster than the previous quickest production EV – yes – the Taycan Turbo S Sport (with performance package)
