Mere weeks ago, KTM took a big step in the right direction when it resumed production at its home in Mattighofen, Austria. All of its fans (including us) breathed a sigh of relief, thinking things were finally looking up. However, in a plot twist no one expected, Team Orange has hit a huge roadblock in building new bikes. Here’s what you need to know.

KTM Stops Production In Austria Again

After just six weeks of resuming production, KTM has again stopped manufacturing bikes at its main plant in Austria. The reason is said to be supply chain issues and a shortage of essential components. Reportedly, the new CEO, Gottfried Neumeister, reached out to the employees via a video message, saying: “Due to serious supply chain problems, it is impossible to continue production as planned.”

Reports from Austria also suggest the existing inventory was only enough for 4,200 motorcycles, and production has now stopped till July 27, 2025. What happens to the employees, you ask? Well, there’s a new agreement in place to avoid layoffs and also help KTM save some money. From May 1 to July 27, there will be a 30-hour work week for the 3,000 employees. Wages will drop accordingly, and skilled workers can do their jobs from home.

The Reason For The Stoppage Dates Back To The Early Financial Woes

Believe it or not, this is a “reap what you sow” situation. The reason for the stoppage is said to be KTM’s early financial issues with its suppliers. There were no orders to suppliers for three months, which is why many companies simply suspended parts production for Team Orange. So with KTM placing fresh orders, these suppliers will now take their own time to meet orders.

What does that mean for all of us? Simple: a delay in getting KTM’s flagship bikes. Except for the 390 and 790 range, all KTM bikes (890, 1390, 990 ranges) are produced in Mattighofen. Out of these, many are yet to reach international markets (including the US), and with production again stopped, a delay is inevitable.
