The latest addition to the Hyundai Motor Group’s expansive portfolio promises more than just elegant luxury or wallet-friendly models; it brings the heat… literally. Magma, a sub-brand of the Genesis luxury line, has just delivered its first production model, the 2027 GV60 Magma, an EV SUV that comes with all the bells and whistles to get you going fast. Genesis says that each model in its stable will receive the Magma treatment, meaning we could very well see this sub-brand fleshed out over the coming years, and we’re totally here for it!
The GV60 Magma Is An Electric Luxury Rocket
Powering the GV60 Magma are two electric motors that, combined, put out 609 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque in normal driving conditions. Enabling Boost Mode bumps output up to 650 horsepower and 583 pound-feet for 15 seconds. With the Launch Control active, the 4,938-pound GV60 Magma can reach 60 MPH in 3.4 seconds and 124 MPH in 10.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 164 MPH. The battery powering the GV60 Magma is the same found in the 2026 Genesis GV60: an 84-kWh lithium-ion pack.
Genesis made sure to include various high-performance functions, including multiple drive modes like Sprint, GT, and a custom setting, an electronic LSD, electronic stability control, and more. There’s also a Drift Mode function that allows the luxury EV SUV to get sideways, as well as High-Performance Battery Control (HPBC) that optimizes battery temperature for peak performance when pushing the GV60 Magma to the limits. To make the experience more immersive, Genesis kindly added a Virtual Gear Shift system, which adjusts motor output, torque, and regenerative braking to simulate shifts, while reproducing the sound of a high-revving engine to really give drivers the sensation of a fully-engaged machine. This is similar to the feature found in the racy Hyundai Ionic 5 N model, though with more breadth.
Understated Performance Design Exudes A Sense Of Raucous Refinement
At first glance, we see the handiwork of Magma’s design team as it pertains to performance, with the GV60 Magma sporting a lower, wider stance that both enhances its performance stability and gives it a more aggressive appearance. This is achieved by lowering the GV60’s ride height by 20mm, or 0.8 inches, and incorporating wide 275-mm tires. The bumpers, canards, and side skirts have also been redesigned to incorporate Magma’s design ethos: “Athletic Elegance”, emphasizing subtle, untapped power via smooth, streamlined contours that hide the model’s true capabilities. The updated bodywork is complemented by Magma-specific 21-inch forged wheels, fiery orange paint with black accents, and various performance-focused additions, like the rear wing-type spoiler and rear diffuser.
Calm Luxury Doesn’t Get Left Out Of The High-Performance Recipe
All the performance buffs considered, Genesis made sure to include a high level of calm and serenity to the experience rather than all-out pavement destruction. This is achieved via a suspension tuning that includes recalibrated roll center and a more refined geometry. Electronic Control Suspension and End-of-Travel control systems aid in delivering that delicate balance between sharp, precise cornering and comfort. Further aiding the serenity of the drive are Hydro G-Bushings in the front suspension and dual-layer bushings in the rear crossmember, both of which minimize vibration and impact, while a combination of Active Noise Control-Road, sound-insulating glass, and reinforced door sealing ensures calm focus, no matter the driving conditions.
Interior Refinement Takes The Fight To The Luxury Elites
Speaking more to the cabin’s luxuries, the GV60 Magma includes a slew of sleek, soft, and plush additions that keep it firmly in the upmarket, alongside names such as Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. The seats, doors, and center console feature Chamude, a synthetic suede-like material, while Magma-themed stitching, quilting, and seatbelts accent the monochromatic design palette. A unique steering wheel and high-gloss/dark metal-finished buttons and knobs help maintain the premium, yet sporty vibes put forth by the exterior design. The GV60 Magma is set to arrive on U.S. soil in 2026, with pricing, as well as more Magma variants of Genesis’ lineup, to follow at later dates.
