Think of iconic bikemakers, and Norton Motorcycles will certainly come to mind. Yes, its financial woes have hurt the image in recent years, but no one can take away the illustrious past and commendable motorcycles under the brand. Let’s not forget, the bikemaker’s troubles are mostly behind it, thanks to backing from Indian giant TVS Motors, and expansion plans are in full swing as we speak. As part of that, we now have confirmation of some interesting future plans of Norton. And these involve making the brand more accessible for first-time buyers!
Norton Is Working On Single And Twin-Cylinder Entry-Level Bikes
The news comes straight from the home of Norton’s owner: India. According to reputable sources, the bikemaker is working on two new platforms. One of these is a single-cylinder setup, with capacities ranging from 400 to 450cc. The other has a twin-cylinder layout, with capacities between the 600 and 650cc range. The latter is said to be directly aimed at the ever-so-popular Royal Enfield 650cc range, while the former would take on RE and Honda’s 350cc bikes.
Details are scarce as you’d expect, but we do know Norton had revealed its plans to whip up six new motorcycles last year. And with the existing V4 engines not meeting international norms, the company has no other option but to whip up brand-new engines. With TVS’ know-how in the entry-level segment (it already makes BMW’s 313cc mill in India), these new Norton engines will also inevitably have their production set in the most populous country. R&D, though, will probably be in Britain.
The New Norton Entry-Level Machines Could Debut Next Year
The rumors suggest the new entry-level Nortons will debut sometime between the next 12 and 18 months. More details about the bikes will follow by the end of 2025, possibly with an official confirmation (or prototype reveal) at the 2025 EICMA. What about the American launch? Sadly, it’s too soon to comment on that. But we can tell you that Norton’s global expansion plans do mention America as a “key market.” So it’s a matter of ‘when’, not ‘if’ here.
As a refresher, Norton’s current lineup comprises three machines. There’s the twin-cylinder Commando 961, the V4SV sports bike, and the V4CR cafe racer naked bike. We’ve mentioned the basic specs of each below:
