Earlier this year, in May 2024, at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, BMW showed a design study of a two-seater M8 roadster concept that it had been working on to some passionate BMW fans. This got a very positive response from everyone present, which means there was a good amount of interest in this vehicle. BMW has done something similar in the past with the M3 CSL homage, and it’s looking to do the same with this car.
The head of BMW Group Design, Adrian van Hooydonk, later revealed at an event held in Italy that the beautiful concept would make it into production, just like the aforementioned M3 CSL. While fans were overjoyed by this news, BMW has decided to make a very limited series run of this vehicle. This means only a handful of BMW customers will be able to purchase this beautiful roadster.
Only 50 Skytops Will Be Made
BMW has followed in the footsteps of its previous limited edition sports car and limited the production of the M8 Skytop to just 50 units in total. This iconic roadster takes design inspiration from some of BMW’s beloved roadsters, like the elegant 507 and the Z8. Design elements of these vehicles can be seen clearly, with the arrow shape and shark nose front design, which is very reminiscent of the BMW 507. At the rear, it mimics features found on the Z8 with the rear light and convertible deck. The overall look is a bit more chiseled but very clean and elegant.
The interior is just as elegant but very recognizable as what you would find in the regular series BMW M8, but with high-end materials and finishes. Every inch of the interior is covered in leather, which extends to the integrated roll bar. You get crystal elements on the steering and gear knob, adding a bit more class to the already elegant interior. Higher-end equipment includes soft-close doors and a powerful Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system. This is a perfect collector’s item for loyal BMW aficionados, and it isn’t just a showpiece, but a very powerful one.
It Will Be Powered By BMW’s Twin-Turbo V-8
The Skytop will be powered by BMWs most powerful engine in production, which is the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, making 625 horsepower. This is expected as the BMW 3.0 CSL which was based on the M4 used that car’s engine. Since the Skytop is based on the BMW M8, it uses the same engine also. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic and BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive system. It can hit 60 MPH in 3.3 seconds, which makes it just as fast as any series production BMW.
There is no pricing for the Skytop, but the limited edition CSL was sold for a price of $1.35 million each. The M8 Skytop is expected to cost more than this, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem for BMW, since this car was sold out shortly after it was announced.
