Speeding is dangerous because the higher the velocity, the greater the force that could impact another driver or a pedestrian. In reality, many people often break the speed limit by a few miles per hour because the road conditions permit it.

There are degrees of speeding, though. Setting the cruise at 60 mph on a country highway with a 55-mph limit is one thing. Going 76 mph through Vienna, Austria, is an entirely different level of danger. When someone recently did this, the cops impounded the driver’s Bugatti Chiron.

Doing Over Double The Speed Limit In The City

The incident occurred near Austria’s Parliament building in Vienna at about 3:30 PM local time, according to oe24. The police were there checking for speeders when a black Bugatti Chiron with German license plates came by at 76 mph (123 kilometers per hour) in a spot with a 31-mph (50-kph) limit. The cops immediately stopped the hypercar, arrested the driver, and confiscated the vehicle.

The driver was a 38-year-old Austrian. However, he didn’t own the car and told police that it belonged to a friend. The cops immediately took his driver’s license. Depending on what the court finds, he might lose his driving privileges for a while.

The police would have impounded the Chrion, but the cops determined the driver was telling the truth about not owning the Bugatti. The car’s actual possessor was able to recover the vehicle. The driver is on the hook for a $335 (310 euros) fine to pay for towing the machine away from the scene, according to Heute.at.

Austrian media reported that people saw the Chiron on the road in Vienna the day after the speeding incident. The vehicle allegedly belonged to a supercar dealer in Munich, and two men from the showroom had picked the car up from the towing yard. People spotted the supercar again in Vienna the day after the incident. They’ve now reportedly returned the machine to Germany.

The Bugatti Chiron

Driving a Chiron at just 31 miles per hour in a city with crowded traffic might actually be a challenge. Its quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W-12 produces 1,479 horsepower and has a top speed of 261 miles per hour. Driving slow is not what this car is supposed to do.

TopSpeed’s Take

We can’t imagine what someone must be thinking to speed near Austria’s parliament building because this is the type of place that’s sure to have a higher-than-normal amount of police and security. Doing 76 mph in a 31-mph zone is a terrible idea, but doing it in front of a major government building is just asking for trouble. It’s hard to have much sympathy for the driver in this case.
