In a move that could reshape the affordable electric vehicle market, MG has begun production of the new MG4 electric hatchback — the first mass-market EV globally to feature a semi-solid-state battery. At a press event on July 17, MG Brand Division General Manager Chen Cui confirmed the car’s official debut will take place on August 5. But the big story isn’t just the tech — it’s the price.
The First Semi-Solid Battery You Can Actually Buy
The semi-solid-state battery, supplied by QingTao Energy, contains just 5% liquid electrolyte — a huge leap toward the elusive goal of true solid-state tech. MG claims the 70 kWh pack offers a CLTC-rated range of 537 kilometers (about 333 miles) and, crucially, performs better in the cold than traditional lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. Range retention at –7°C is reportedly 13.8-percent better, a spec that could attract buyers in colder climates.
Safety is also a highlight. According to MG, the new battery passed a brutal 360-degree puncture test — the kind of result that helps solidify consumer trust in bleeding-edge battery tech. Energy density is rated at 180 Wh/kg, putting it well above many LFP packs in the same segment.
$11,000 For A Car With This Tech?
But the real shocker is the price. Chen Cui confirmed that the MG4 will be priced between 80,000 and 120,000 Yuan — or roughly $11,000 to $16,400 USD. That puts it squarely in competition with the BYD Dolphin, China’s dominant compact EV. But with more range, rear-wheel drive, and a more powerful motor, MG is betting customers will see a clear upgrade.
“The MG4 is a better product. If we match the Dolphin on price, there’s no reason customers wouldn’t choose us,” said Chen.
Rear-Drive Fun And More Interior Room
Unlike the front-drive Dolphin, the MG4 uses a 120 kW rear-mounted motor and sends power to the back wheels — a configuration that’s typically better for handling. The car is also just bigger than most of its rivals, measuring 4,395 mm long with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. That extra length translates to more interior space, something that could matter to buyers seeking a family-friendly commuter without sacrificing range or tech.
New Tech, Inside And Out
Inside, the MG4 debuts the MG×Oppo cockpit system, a collaboration with smartphone maker Oppo. This infotainment setup allows voice commands, gesture controls, and app syncing between your phone and the vehicle — features normally reserved for pricier EVs.
Styling-wise, MG leaned heavily on its Cyberster roadster for inspiration. The updated MG4 features a sculpted front fascia, split headlights, and a glowing front emblem. New paint options include Donglai Purple and Qingbo Green, the latter using imported European pigments for a premium effect.
A Global First, Built in Nanjing
Production is already underway at SAIC’s Nanjing facility, and if MG can deliver on its claims, the new MG4 could be one of the most important electric cars of the year — not just for China, but for the global EV market. Semi-solid-state batteries are no longer a prototype dream. They’re on the production line. And now, they’re affordable.
