Ford issued a recall covering a total of 33,576 units of the 2020-2022 Escape and 2021-2013 Bronco Sport due to a potential fire hazard. In the affected vehicles, the fuel injectors may crack, which would allow a gasoline leak under the hood. If things are hot enough, the combustible substance could ignite.

According to Ford:

  • Bronco Sport: 15,355 Vehicles Affected
  • Escape: 18,221 Vehicles Affected

What Happened?

This campaign is actually an expansion of an earlier recall because of a problem with that repair. Ford previously attempted to fix this problem through a software upgrade, but the models in this new campaign didn’t receive the correct Powertrain Control Module (PCM) code.

Dealers will evaluate the cars depending on whether they have the correct code using a Software Validation Form in the Professional Technician System.

Ford’s chronology for this recall explains the events leading up to the new recall. Ford’s Critical Concern Group learned about the incomplete software upgrade campaign in November 2024, and it decided to investigate further. The inquiry showed that the software available from the service tool wasn’t always the latest version. Starting in January 2025, the team began cross-referencing this information to determine which vehicles didn’t get the proper update. They found that over 90 percent of the previously repaired SUVs received the correct code. The new fixes are for the remaining models.

Ford has no reports of injuries due to this problem. However, the automaker is aware of four underhood fires. The company can’t confirm whether these blazes are due to the cracked fuel injector issue, though.

The Repair

Ford will recall the affected vehicles once again to have the PCM software upgrade. Dealers will evaluate the cars depending on whether they have the correct code using a Software Validation Form in the Professional Technician System. They’ll perform the update as necessary. If any customers have already paid for repairs due to this issue, they can ask Ford for a reimbursement.

Ford will begin sending out notifications about this recall to owners on April 24, 2025.

TopSpeed’s Take:

It’s vital to repair any recall affecting your vehicle. By law, the repairs cost owners nothing, so owners should prioritize their time to fix the problem. The situation is especially important if the fault could cause a fire.
