We’re looking forward to seeing what Volkswagen-backed Scout Motors is preparing for us tonight during its official reveal. There has been a lot of speculation around the revival of this brand, and how this upstart electric vehicle (EV) company could help save Volkswagen from its financial meltdown.
Like I’ve said before, Americans want Volkswagen to return as the cool, young and hip anti-establishment brand they remember from the old Beetle, the Bus and even the new Beetle that came later. The recently launched ID. Buzz electric van will definitely help give the company back part of that image. But Scout Motors will be an attempt to sell Americans something that resonates with them on a deeper, cultural level.
Scout Motors Will Sell Retro-Inspired Electric Trucks And SUVs
What we know for sure, is that during its official reveal, Scout Motors plans on presenting two concepts. One will be an SUV, while the other, a pickup truck. Both will have a design that’s largely inspired by the iconic International Harvester Scout, produced from 1961 to 1980.
What’s particularly interesting about Scout Motors, is that it won’t act as one of the VW group’s brands, like Audi or Porsche. It’s a wholly owned subsidiary, backed by multi-billion investments from VW. This should allow it to have a lot more creative freedom. These vehicles could also borrow some of Rivian’s know-how, since Volkswagen recently invested a whopping $5 billion in Rivian development. To say nothing of the $2 billion VW spent on a new facility to build the Scouts in South Carolina.
We’ll make sure to follow this reveal and circle back here with all the details. Until then, we suggest you don’t miss out on one of the most highly-anticipated car reveals this year. The livestream starts tonight at 5 p.m. EDT/ 4 p.m. CDT on the Scout Motors website.
