The Tesla Cybertruck may have taken forever to arrive, but it’s finally here. And it’s weird, grand, controversial and everything we’ve come to expect from the Tesla brand. But Tesla isn’t quite done with the electric truck’s lineup, as there’s still one more piece of the puzzle left: the range extender. Where is it?
Tesla had originally promised it would arrive in early 2025, but we just found out through Electrek that its production will be delayed again. Don’t expect it to arrive until next summer, at least.
Tesla Cybertruck Range Extender Will Cost $16,000
The Cybertruck’s range extender, which will essentially be an extra battery pack that’ll sit inside the truck’s bed and take up a third of its available space, won’t be cheap. Tesla is currently advertising it on its website at a whopping $16,000, with a $2,000 down payment.
The battery itself is a 50-kWh unit that, according to Tesla, could help increase the Cybertruck dual motor’s total range from 350 miles to more than 445 miles. For the Cyberbeast tri-motor model, the extender would bump range from 320 miles to over 440 miles.
At least, those were Tesla’s original promises. Surprise! It now advertises the option at 445+ miles of extra range for the dual-motor model. If you opt for a Cyberbeast with off-road tires, that number drops to 415+ miles. Interestingly enough, if you opt for the standard tire set on the Cyberbeast, the projected range is the same 440 miles as originally promised.
But hey, this is Tesla, a carmaker well known for making outlandish claims and not following through. I’m sure when the Cybertruck’s range extender arrives next year, it’ll make some owners happy. But we still have a long way to go before actually seeing it out there in the wild.
