The Ford Mustang is a performance car icon. It was a smash success as soon as the vehicle debuted in the 1960s. Over the years, buyers have been able to get the model with basic four- and six-cylinder engines to a variety of high-performance V-8s.

The times appear to be changing, though. Ford released its 2024 sales details, and the Mustang had a rough year. Deliveries were down 9.5 percent year-over-year. Meanwhile, the Mustang Mach-E EV had the best sales since the vehicle’s debut.

Mustang Sales Fall, and Mach-E Sales Rise

Ford moved just 44,003 copies of the Mustang in 2024, which was down 9.5 percent from 48,605 examples in 2023. According to TopSpeed’s data, this is the worst sales year for the model ever. The previous low was in 2022, when there were 47,566 deliveries. The Mustang’s best sales year ever was in 1966, when Ford delivered an astonishing 607,568 of them.

While the drop in volume is intriguing, keep in mind that the Mustang is in a time of transition. The sixth-generation model is retired, and the seventh-gen is taking its place. These changeovers often result in limited supply because the factories have to re-tool to build the new vehicles.

Meanwhile, the Mustang Mach-E saw deliveries of 51,745 copies in 2024. The figure was up 26.9 percent from 40,771 sales in 2023. This was the best year ever for the Mach-E, surpassing last year’s record sales. The figures show the Mach-E moving 7,742 more examples than the Mustang in 2024, which is a significant success for the EV. Some hardcore pony car fans downplayed the Mach-E when it arrived, but the model has proven successful for Ford.

More Ford Sales Details

EVs are becoming an increasingly more significant part of Ford’s sales in the United States. In 2024, the brand sold 97,865 electric models, which was up 34.8 percent from 72,608 units last year. Of those, 33,510 vehicles were the F-150 Lightning – a 38.7-percent year-over-year increase.

The F-Series family of trucks was Ford’s bestselling product in 2024. The company moved 765,649 of them, which was a two-percent increase from 2023.

TopSpeed’s Take

The times are changing. EVs are becoming increasingly popular, while combustion-powered vehicles are still hanging on. The interesting situation is whether the Mach-E remains dominant when Ford ramps up production of the new Mustang.
