Lamborghini’s hybrid supercar,
, makes 1,001 horsepower. Its next electrified car, and the brand’s first fully electric one, could make almost double that number, according to Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume. Blume said that the Lamborghini 2+2 grand tourer will “allow for” up to 1,973 horsepower and support a lightning-quick 980-volt architecture, which should enable rapid charging, as well as other benefits.
Lamborghini’s First EV Will Make Big Power
“I promise that it will be a typical Lamborghini, something very emotional,” the CEO tells Autocar. Lamborghini is very focused on injecting “feel” and emotional engagement into its EV. It’s easy to see why — some enthusiasts prefer gasoline-powered sports cars even in the face of faster EVs due simply to the fact that their gasoline engines and transmissions deliver more feedback than the silent (if sometimes bone-crushing) thrust delivered by performance EVs.
In part, the EV’s alleged 980-volt architecture should help in this, if only by bringing more power to the table. Most EVs use 400v architecture at most, which is already a huge improvement over the 240 volts most cars and EVs have operated on for a very, very long time. Namely, the benefits come in the form of an opportunity for increases in power output, as well as faster charging speeds and greater efficiency. In a car that’s made to be driven, all will be important.
“[The Lamborghini EV will] use a platform that development of is being led by Porsche for Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini and Porsche, that will allow for up to 2000 hp and 980 volts. It’s a very specific set-up for Lamborghini.”
— Oliver Blume, CEO, Volkswagen Group
The Lamborghini EV Will Share Its Bones
As Blume’s above comment indicates, Lamborghini’s new EV will be part of a larger electric vehicle architecture developed for other high-end brands in the VW portfolio, like Porsche and Bentley. The new EV will benefit from the “approach that the Volkswagen Group has with a joint electric kit that will benefit from synergies across brands,” says Blume. It isn’t clear how much of the new EV, rumored to be based on the Lanzador concept (pictured), will be exclusive to the marque. Blume did confirm the EV will be built at the company’s Sant’Agata facilities, however.
TopSpeed’s Take
Ordinarily, we’d say something here about how it isn’t clear how well Lamborghini expects the new EV to do given the climate surrounding enthusiasts and performance EVs, but Lamborghini doesn’t appear to be worried. Lambo CEO Stephan Winkelmann said that because the EV is a new model and not a replacement for one of the current ICE-powered models, there’s less risk the EV will hurt sales. Rather, it may increase them. More than anything, it’ll be interesting to see if Lamborghini does offer the full 2,000 horsepower model right out of the gate, or if there’ll be a little more gamesmanship involved and some further models will eventually hit that figure.
