The many games in the expansive Metal Gear video game franchise have sold millions of copies worldwide since the first entry’s arrival in 1987. Many of the games star the elite soldier Solid Snake, who stealthily infiltrates various military bases.

Mitsubishi is gearing up to bring several customized vehicles to this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon. One of them is a modified Outlander PHEV with tweaks inspired by the Metal Gear franchise.

The Outlander PHEV Night Seeker Concept

For its Metal Gear-inspired concept, Mitsubishi outfits this Outlander PHEV with several unique features. The front end has a clear panel ahead of the front grille and headlights. It’s unclear whether the brackets on the front are for tying gear there or if this piece is removable to act as a shield for Solid Snake. Big recovery hoops are on the lower fascia. This SUV can produce plenty of light thanks to the lamps in the front bumper, at the base of each A-pillar, and on the roof rack.

The body is two shades of dark gray, creating a camouflage pattern that would help keep the SUV hidden at night. Chunky fender covers add a brawny appearance to the Outlander’s flanks. The wheels are also chunky, with knobby tires wrapped around them.

The design team didn’t modify the Outlander’s rear, except for continuing the two-tone gray color scheme back there.

Konami, the publisher of the Metal Gear series, is currently working on a remake of the fan-favorite Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. There’s no official release date yet, but the game should come out in 2025. This custom Outlander might be part of the marketing for the new game.

More From Mitsubishi In Tokyo

While the Metal Gear-inspired Outlander is the most exciting vehicle from Mitsubishi at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, there are several other vehicles to check out. For example, the Delica D:5 Active Seeker is a custom version of the minivan with a tent on the top. Like with the Outlander Night Seeker, the company adds extra lights to the base of the A-pillars and the roof rack. A topographic map decals adorn the sides of the body.

There’s also the DJ Triton that comes from a partnership between Mitsubishi and Red Bill Japan. As the name implies, the truck has a full DJ booth in the cargo bed.

There’s also an aggressive-looking, orange-and-black Triton with a design by the Japanese pop star Hiromi. Another Triton on display in Tokyo will be for competition in the Asia Cross Country Rally series. Delica D:5 and Delica Mini support vehicles from the same motorsport championship are also part of the automaker’s display.

TopSpeed’s Take

The Outlander Night Seeker is everything we love from Tokyo Auto Salon because it’s an absurd collaboration between an automaker and a well-known Japanese brand. Would Solid Snake actually drive this SUV? Probably not. However, we can’t help but like it.
