Porsche has been expanding its lineup with updated versions of its vehicles, new technology, and mechanical improvements. It seems that the 911 lineup is getting some additional additions, which we’ve seen already, like the 992.2 GT3, GT3 Touring, 911 S/T, Carrera T Convertible, and the hybrid Carrera GTS. However, Porsche may not be done yet, as there might be another new addition.
For the first time, the 911 is available as a hybrid with the new 911 Carrera GTS, and this may not be the only hybrid 911. We will get a new version of the 992 Turbo very soon, and that might be available with a hybrid powertrain.
A Hybrid 911 Turbo Could Be On The Cards
Porsche recently introduced the hybrid version of the Carrera GTS not long ago, and we aren’t too surprised, since almost every other combustion engine Porsche has a hybrid variant. It was only a matter of time before the 911 got electrified.
However, new information has been made available that may lead us to believe that Porsche is planning on making a hybrid version of the 911 Turbo. This information was disclosed by Porsche Chief Financial Officer Lutz Meschke during a conference call related to Q3 2024 sales. He said that the 911 Turbo will use battery cells from Varta.
For those who are unfamiliar with Varta, this is the company providing battery cells for the 911 GTS hybrid. Porsche has already made plans to strengthen its business relationship with Varta by acquiring a majority stake in its subsidiary company V4Drive Battery GmbH with an investment of 30 million euros. Porsche will also work closely with the V4Drive to develop the batteries that will eventually be sold to other automakers.
The 1.9 kWh lithium-ion battery in the 911 GTS has already reached the industrialization stage and is getting ready for production. However, Porsche hasn’t confirmed that it will be making a hybrid 911 Turbo, but Porsche spokesperson Luke Vandezande had this to say:
We can confirm that we have, among other versions, a new turbo variant in the 911 pipeline. As usual, we will choose an innovative drive train concept for the highest-performance derivative of our icon. However, we are not in a position yet to confirm the exact timing.
A Turbo Hybrid Means More Power
The 911 GTS hybrid now has a new 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat-six which now makes 478 horsepower, but combined with the hybrid system, it has a total output of 532 horsepower. That is 59 horsepower more than the previous GTS. Adding a hybrid system to the already powerful 911 Turbo would simply mean more power. The current turbo and Turbo S make 580 and 650 horsepower respectively. If it only gained as much power as the 911 GTS, then we’re looking at a power bump of around 640 horsepower for the turbo and 710 horsepower for the Turbo S.
The 911 Turbo is already a very fast and comfortable everyday sports car, adding more power with the PDK and consistent launch control will only enhance its capabilities. The 2025 911 Turbo is already planned for production, so we may see this hybrid by 2026.
