An onslaught of 21 new models will be launched by Mercedes over the next several years, and this AMG-branded electric SUV will be one of them. It’ll pack big power, a full-size SUV footprint, and will be a standalone model. That’ll put it among some serious cars, like AMG’s GT, SL, and GT 4-Door sports cars (and sedan). Reportedly, this sleek, low-slung electric SUV will also pack around 1,000 horsepower.
AMG’s 1,000 HP SUV Is Coming
Mercedes will place this new SUV on its AMG.EA platform, which will support a number of models in the AMG lineup, potentially including some with combustion engines. Mercedes is rumored to be working on a new electrified V8, for example. Here, we expect nothing but electric motors. It’s possible the SUV will leverage some new-to-Mercedes tech. Axial-flux electric motors provide greater torque than current mass-market electric motors used by much of the auto industry in today’s EVs. Mercedes recently acquired Yasa, a manufacturer of high-performance electric motors in 2021. It’s possible insights gained from the company will come into play with the new SUV. Moreover, AMG will almost certainly present the vehicle with ties to its Formula 1 arm, especially given the use of hybrid systems in today’s F1 cars, and it’s rumored the vehicle could also bring newer battery technology to market as well.
What’s It Like Inside?
We can only guess at the SUV’s interior, though the sloping roof indicates this SUV won’t pack a third row. Expect the remainder to be extremely sporty, likely using an AMG-specific version of Mercedes’ MB.OS infotainment system. Given the AMG branding, we’re also expecting sporty bucket seats trimmed in acres of leather. Our spy photographers report the SUV is more than 15 feet long, so expect a very spacious interior as well. Mercedes will likely be targeting six-figure performance SUVs like the Lamborghini Urus SE and BMW XM with this model, and its pricing will certainly reflect that.
TopSpeed’s Take
Mercedes’ electric high-performance SUV will likely compete with the Urus and XM, but its sloped roof and low-slung footprint will stand out next to the boxier XM. The Urus is extremely popular in this segment, and its staying power will be hard for Mercedes to overcome. The upcoming EV will have to do more than promise big horsepower, and we get the feeling Mercedes will really work its F1 ties to make the model stand out among its competitors.
