A press release from Stellantis on October 14, 2025, which primarily consisted of future business plans, held a small nugget of intrigue aside from the massive amount of money they plan to invest in the future of their production. In the ‘Michigan’ section, they mention plans to develop an all-new range-extended EV (REEV) and an internal combustion large SUV.
Initially, I assumed they were referring to the upcoming 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which will feature the Hurricane inline-six engine, as well as a range-extended EV powertrain. The only problem is that the 2026 Grand Wagoneer is slated to arrive in 2026 with both power options, whereas this mysterious large SUV carries a production date starting in 2028. Let’s discuss some possibilities.
Stellantis Has Big REEV Aspirations
A name that comes to mind when discussing electrified powertrains as they pertain to the auto conglomerate is the Ramcharger 1500 electric pickup. After being teased for a few years, the Ramcharger 1500 EV was officially dropped in September 2025 and renamed the RAM 1500 REV, which is also slated for release in 2026 and will boast a range-extended EV powertrain instead of a fully-electric unit. This name change may be due to several reasons, including the Ramcharger’s limited market presence in the pickup segment, although some speculate that it could be related to another model set to assume the Ramcharger title. An SUV.
Stellantis is obviously taking steps to push the REEV powertrain, given that they plan on investing nearly $100 million to prepare the Warren Truck Assembly Plant to produce the upcoming 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV and combustion models. Stellantis stated that the unknown large SUV set for production in 2028 will also be developed at the Warren location alongside the Grand Wagoneer models.
Why The Ramcharger Name Makes Sense Here
Historically, Stellantis has been known to revive old names for new models, which include names like Daytona and SIX PACK for the Charger. When the Ramcharger was announced to return as a pickup, some were wondering what exactly the play was, and maybe Stellantis began to wonder the same, as the Ramcharger was a well-respected SUV in its day. With the Ramcharger name already tied to electrification in the modern age, thanks to the electric pickup concept, it’s not far off to speculate that Stellantis is looking to bring it back under the same premise of electrification, just not as a pickup, given the history behind the original rugged SUV.
Now, everything is speculation until we hear word from Stellantis, which could be more than two years from now, given the 2028 timeframe for the unknown SUV, though RAM CEO Tim Kuniskis promised 25 new product announcements between June 2025 and summer 2027, which lends credence to the notion that the mystery SUV could be one of those models. That said, it would make sense for them to dub the unknown SUV ‘Ramcharger’ since the name has already been dug out of the bin and assigned to the RAM brand. Nothing is confirmed, though the small tidbit we’ve been given has all the makings of a classic “Whodunnit?”, or, rather, “Whatisit?”.
