Subaru has confirmed that the limited BRZ 紫 Murasaki Edition has now gone on sale in Canada, and that only 100 units will be available nationwide. The Murasaki is the sixth and latest edition to-date in Subaru’s special color series for the BRZ two-seater sports car, with only 500 examples being built in total for North America. Each will be priced from $39,295 CAD, or just over $2,00 above the range-topping tS trim. U.S. examples meanwhile are available from $36,615 USD, both excluding destination fees.

It Means ‘Purple’… No, Seriously…

We should address the vibrantly-colored-yet-lightweight elephant in the room. Unlike the empowered WRX ‘Raiu,’ which translates from Japanese as ‘rainstorm’ and was launched in 2018, ‘Murasaki’ quite literally means ‘purple,’ a nod to the edition’s exclusive Galaxy Purple Pearl exterior paint. This is at least slightly more adventurous nomenclature compared with the examples available for U.S. customers, which will simply be called the ‘BRZ Series.Purple.’

Alongside the Galazy Purple finish, each Murasaki BRZ features gold brakes calipers, a low-profile spoiler finished in gloss black, grey accent stitching in the cabin, and tribute ‘Murasaki Edition’ badging in front of the gearshifter.

But It Does Come With 228-Horsepower And Track-Tuned Suspension

Primarily a cosmetic upgrade, the Murasaki Edition has been built atop Subaru’s range-topping BRZ tS, or ‘Tuned by STI.’ The 2.4-liter Boxer four-cylinder – complete with a STI flexible V-bar for additional rigidity – produces the same 228-horsepower and 184-pound-feet of torque as its base model, all of which is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. 0-60 MPH time is completed in a sprightly 5.5 seconds.

Rather than quarter-mile grunt however, it’s the corners through which the BRZ and its GR86 sibling from Toyota truly shine. Like the tS, the Murasaki features track-tuned suspension from STi (Subaru’s in-house performance arm), a wider rear track to increase traction, high-performance Brembo brakes, and bespoke front dampers. The whole package rides on exclusive, 10-spoke silver 18-inch alloys.
