Subaru is up to something, and maybe something big. The quirky Japanese automaker known for its versatile vehicles and all-wheel-drive technology has just applied to trademark what appears to be a range of new vehicle names. According to filings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Subaru may, possibly, potentially, could be planning on introducing up to seven new vehicles in the coming years.
Lots Of Three-Letter Names
So, what are these possible future models called? Well, just like many luxury brands, these trademarked vehicle names would be comprised of three letters. According to trademark filings, there’s the ACX, VPX, and ZPX, plus ostensibly higher-performance STI versions of all three, as well as what would almost certainly be a ruggedized version of the ZPX called the Wilderness.
Subaru currently offers several other Wilderness models, variants of the Crosstrek, Forester, and Outback. These vehicles feature enhanced ground clearance and standard front skid plates, roll on all-terrain tires for extra traction in challenging conditions, and feature revised bumpers that provide improved approach and departure angles. Beyond all that, Wilderness models also gain unique exterior cladding, anti-glare hood decals, water-resistant StarTex interior upholstery, and many other enhancements.
It’s almost impossible to tell for sure right now, but it’s reasonable to assume these future products would be utility vehicles of some sort. Drivers around the world have a seemingly insatiable appetite for SUVs, plus the “X” in each of those names seems to suggest these vehicles are crossovers of some sort.
Expect Electrification, Too
Based on those trademark filings, these potential future vehicles would almost certainly be electric – or at the very least, electrified. According to application documents, each of the names applies to “automobiles and structural parts therefor; electric cars.”
This would dovetail nicely with the new 2026 Trailseeker, an all-electric SUV that was unveiled at the New York Auto Show earlier in the year. Similar to the battery-powered Solterra utility vehicle, Subaru’s first EV, the Trailseeker, is more than six inches longer and roughly one inch taller. Additionally, the automaker’s signature Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive System is standard on this model along with a range of driving modes that tailor the vehicle’s responses to different conditions. Motivation is provided by two potent electric motors that deliver around 375 horsepower for rapid acceleration.
A 74.7-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack stores energy and gives the Trailseeker an estimated range of 260 miles on a full charge, a respectable figure for a ruggedized vehicle like this.
High-Performance Is Almost Certainly Part Of The Equation, Too
Aside from bread-and-butter models and a Wilderness version of the ZPX, it seems Subaru will also offer high-performance trims of the ACX, VPX, and ZPX. The automaker filed trademark applications for STI variants of all three of these nameplates, too.
If history is any guide, these future STI vehicles should offer significantly more performance than their mainstream counterparts. Expect more aggressive styling, too, along with unique tuning, and plenty of other features designed to enhance the driving experience.
TopSpeed’s Take
Of course, much of this is speculation, as details about these vehicles – aside from the names and likelihood of electrification – are non-existent. But reading the tea leaves, it sure sounds like Subaru is looking at introducing a wide range of new battery-powered utility vehicles.
