The upcoming Jaguar Type 00 represents a bold new chapter for the iconic British automaker. While official production images have yet to be revealed, a new batch of spy photos of a heavily camouflaged Type 00 show the next-gen Jag prowling out in the world. These images, along with some digital renderings, can give us a pretty decent idea of what we can expect from Jaguar next. While we don’t know everything yet, we definitely know enough to say that we feel confident that Jaguar is making a departure from its legacy cars like the Jaguar F-Type.
A New Era for Jaguar
Jaguar is rooted in the upper crust. Founded in 1935 by Sir William Lyons, it is known for legendary cars like the XK, E-Type, and XJ220. Now owned by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the brand is shifting toward an all-electric future starting in 2025. In preparation, Jaguar is discontinuing its combustion engine models by early 2024 and rebranding itself as a luxury electric automaker.
This change is monumental. Jaguar has long been a defining fixture of fancy places like country clubs, Michelin restaurants, and other places that have a dress code for adults. Such a change could ruffle the powdered wigs of the bourgeoisie, but Jaguar is moving boldly forward.
The Type 00 Is A Risky Move
The Type 00 is expected to be Jaguar’s most exclusive and expensive model yet. Aiming for up to 430 miles of range (WLTP) and the ability to refill 200 miles of that range in an astounding 15 minutes, it also boasts nearly 1,000 horsepower. However, this high-performance electric vehicle is more than just specs — it symbolizes Jaguar’s ambitious reinvention.
While Jaguar still hasn’t given us much information about the Type 00, between these new spy photos and Jaguar’s page about the Type 00, it’s shaping up to be quite the flagship.
“Exuberant proportions. Unexpected details. Type 00 embodies an uncompromising creative approach to exterior design.” – Jaguar
Part of the risk Jaguar is undertaking is the admittedly fun, loud color options cryptically hinted at on the site. The Type 00 will be offered in colors like Satin Rhodon Rose – inspired by the distinctive rose color of brass as it ages – and Inception Silver Blue, a nod to the popular silver/blue paint used on the 1960s Jaguar E-Type.
TopSpeed’s Take
As Jaguar transitions to an all-electric lineup, this reinvention comes with financial and logistical risks. Shuttering existing models and launching a new line is costly, and some dealers may be dissatisfied with the abrupt shift. Despite these hurdles, Jaguar clearly believes the Type 00 is crucial for its future success. The final production model is expected to be unveiled before the end of the year.
