Initially, BMW unveiled its Neue Klasse concept as the future of the brand. Logically, that would incorporate electrification of some kind. That’s still the case, as BMW’s numerous electrified new models indicate. However, a source within BMW has said that the latest 3 Series, based heavily on the Neue Klasse concept, will also feature an internal combustion engine option.
The Next 3 Series Will Be Gas-Powered, Too
The insider revealed the information during a conversation with German automotive outlet Automobilewoche, stating the new 3 Series will receive both gasoline and electric powertrains. BMW will reportedly launch the new sedan in 2027, though BMW’s spokespersons declined to comment on the powertrain of its upcoming sedan. The inclusion of a gasoline powertrain, possibly a continuation of the brand’s existing six-cylinder engines, would make the eighth-generation 3 Series the latest in 75 years to sport a gasoline powertrain. While the 3 Series has evolved to include hybrid powertrains and increasing electrification over the last decade, BMW has always offered a gas engine in its most popular car.
The Current 3 Series’ Engines Are The Most Likely Candidate
BMW will produce the gasoline powertrain from the current 3 Series if this should happen. Should that be the case, the engine will likely come from the company’s San Luis Potosi, Mexico, plant. BMW could even expand production at its Dingolfing, Germany facility. However, the engine aside, BMW will bring in many of the electric Neue Klasse concept’s features, such as its new infotainment system, to the gas-powered models.
TopSpeed’s Take: Does A New Gas-Powered 3 Series Make Sense?
The BMW insider did not specify which markets would see the new gas-powered 3 Series, however. That said, it’s very likely the US will continue to see gasoline powertrains for BMW models here. BMW already confirmed gasoline powertrains are in the works for the new M3, and it makes sense the same is true of the lesser 3 Series. The US is nowhere near as strict on emissions as Europe is, and the latest 3 Series and M3 are likely to offer gasoline powertrains here as a result. BMW’s mixed energy strategy has proven to be a sales success, and continuing this strategy with the next model down the line is logical.
