If you’re an off-road enthusiast who has always shrugged off picking the Scrambler 400 X (owing to its uber-limited rugged capabilities), we have some good news for you. The British giant has just launched its new Scrambler 400 XC in the US, which aims to be the most rugged entry-level motorcycle in the portfolio. To jog your memory, the bike first debuted in India (where it’s made by Bajaj Auto) a couple of months back.
The Triumph Scrambler 400 XC Costs $800 More Than The Scrambler 400 X
Jumping right in, Triumph has launched the Scrambler 400 XC in America priced at $6,695. That makes it $800 pricier than the Scrambler 400 X, which is somewhat justified by the extra equipment you get. At that price, the XC is right in the heart of the mid-spec scrambler segment. It is way pricier than the Royal Enfield Scram 411 but undercuts the INT Bear 650 and Honda SCL500. Plus, spending just $300 over the XC can get you a proper middleweight scrambler in the form of the Moto Morini SCR.

The New Triumph Scrambler 400 XC Has Off-Road-Specific Changes Over The 400 X
As we noted during the first spotting of the 400 XC’s test mule, this takes the 400 X’s package and adds more off-road prowess to the mix. There are a few things that help achieve that. Most notable here is the new set of wheels. These are cross-spoke hoops, shod with Metzeler Karoo tires. The size is the same, 19 and 17 inches (front and rear), though.
For similar purposes, Triumph has thrown in a dirt bike-inspired front fender, an aluminum bashplate, and tubular protection for the engine. A color-matched windscreen over the LED headlight rounds things off. These are all optional bits for the Scrambler 400 X in case you’re curious, all of which add up to more than the $800 difference.

A Single-Cylinder 398cc Engine Powers The Scrambler 400 XC
Under the skin, the 400 XC is just like the 400 X. It employs the TR series 398cc, single-cylinder engine that produces a respectable 39.5 horsepower and 27.6 pound-feet. The performance will be a bit lower here, though, since the XC is 11 pounds heavier than the X. As for underpinnings, you get a tubular perimeter-type chassis, suspended onto USD forks and a monoshock. Both ends have 5.9 inches of travel–the same as the X.
