Like many other automakers, Volvo has stumbled its way through what looked like a promising U.S. market for battery-electric vehicles just a few years ago. Despite fits and starts, the compact EX30 crossover and the larger, three-row EX90 are on sale now, with 4,970 EX30s and 3,299 EX90s sold through November 2025.
But the Swedes aren’t giving up on EVs. Instead, they’re about to unveil a third production model in a few weeks, and today we can share a few teaser images of the EX60, which wedges itself dimensionally between the EX30 and EX90.
Does That Second Row Flip Rearward?
The EX60 is billed as a two-row five-seater, and one teaser image shows a generous storage bin behind the second row at the base of the liftgate, looking perhaps large enough for the second row to fold backward to stow in the floor, like in a minivan. If our perspective is correct in studying that photo, the seats are split in a 40/60 configuration, making for flexibility in stashing long items, like skis or a two-by-four.
Range Estimate Based On EPA Testing
While Volvo isn’t yet sharing specific dimensions or battery size or torque rating, the automaker proclaims a “best-in-class 400 miles on a single charge,” with all-wheel drive. That’s a preliminary estimate based on EPA testing cycles.
“It turns range anxiety into range comfort, demonstrating that going electric is no longer a compromise,” the automaker says. “Volvo Cars engineers have optimized the car’s range for real-life driving and what customers experience in their daily drive.” If the product-development focus was on real-world testing, then the Swedes certainly have ample opportunities to see exactly how arctic temperatures impact their latest EV’s range.
From San Francisco To L.A.?
Volvo says a range figure of 400 miles — yes, that’s based on great weather, terrain, driving style, and weight — will take the EX60 on a single charge from Paris to Amsterdam, Stockholm to Oslo, or even San Francisco to Los Angeles, if you’re confident about this 381-mile jaunt.
And if you can find a functional 400-kilowatt fast charger, Volvo says the EX60 can add 168 miles of range in just 10 minutes, nearly as fast as a fuel stop. “A quick coffee stop is now enough to recharge the battery and hit the road again.”
Mega Casting And ‘Clever Algorithms’
Enabling the faster charging speeds is the new 800-volt electrical system and software developed in-house to “move energy into the battery more efficiently.” Volvo also credits partner Breathe Battery Technologies with developing “clever algorithms” to constantly adjust how the battery takes in power and “keeping it in its ideal operating zone at all times,” no matter the weather.
The EX60 is a product of Volvo’s SPA3 EV platform, which integrates the battery directly into the vehicle structure. Electric motors were developed in-house, while the EX60 is the first Volvo car built with mega casting that replaces hundreds of smaller parts with a single, high-precision casting to reduce weight and improve range.
Tune In On January 21 For The Reveal
The Volvo EX60 will debut at 12:30 pm ET on January 21, and you can tune in to the livestream on Volvo’s website.
We don’t know yet how much the EX60 will cost in the U.S., but count on ballpark pricing around $60,000 — the halfway point between the $40,000 EX30 and $80,000 EX90.
Until Feb. 2, Volvo is offering a $7,500 EV lease allowance on the EX30 and EX90, as well as 0.99-percent financing for 36 months on select EX30 models.
